Today, on the occasion of World Oral Health Day to promote the oral health of the elderly an event was organized at the Old Age Home, Sector 15 Chandigarh

Under the aegis of Department of Social Welfare, Women & Child Development, Chandigarh Administration free preventive and curative oral health services being provided to residents of all the old age homes in convergence with Oral Health Sciences Centre (OHSC), PGIMER, Chandigarh. During the event, full mouth dentures (artificial set of teeth) distributed among the elderly. Notably, these dentures were prepared for elderly residents at their old age homes without need for them to visit to hospital.

The occasion also marked the launch of POSHAN Pakhwada, 2023 by balloons release and release of Information, education and Communication (IEC) materials as well as the dissemination of the ‘Reference manual for caregivers on oral health care of the elderly. A special announcement regarding initiating a dedicated geriatric & preventive clinic at the oral health sciences centre, PGIMER was also made.

Dr Palika Arora, Director, Social Welfare, U.T. Chandigarh, interacted with Senior Citizens and shared her gratitude towards the elderly and assured full cooperation to deliver oral health services in convergence with PGIMER, Chandigarh at all the Old Age Homes, Orphan Homes, Crèches and Anganwadi Centres running under Department of Social Welfare, Women & Child Development of Chandigarh. Prof. Vivek Lal Director, PGIMER, emphasised the importance of a healthy body for a happy life and how oral health is integrally linked to general health. Approximately 100 old age home residents and caregivers present during the event also shared their positive experiences gathered during their course of treatment. Prof Ashima Goyal, Head, OHSC, appreciated the role of the Department of Social Welfare and caregivers who work tirelessly at the old age homes looking after the health and general needs of the elderly. Prof K Gauba told that the provisioning of oral health services at old age homes is expected to remarkably improve the oral health quality of the elderly.
