Evening of ghazals by Nila Sinha Roy in Kendra’s 229th baithak Programme keeps audience spellbound

Chandigarh-10-Dec,Ghazal aficionados of City Beautiful were treated to a mesmerizing performance by Delhi based renowned Vocalist and Ghazal singer Nila Sinha Roy at the Sham-e-Ghazal organized by the Pracheen Kala Kendra to pay tribute to legendary Begum Akhtar and other legendry poets of repute like Mirza Galib, Kaifi Azmi, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Shakeel Badayuni. The occasion was 229th Monthly Baithak which took place here today at its Bhaskar Rao Indoor Auditorium in Sector 35 complex of the Kendra on 10 December, 2016 at 6:00 pm . The musical evening was well-attended and the audience greeted her rendition of a wide variety of compositions by legendary poets of repute and others with rapturous applause.

Beginning her training in music under Shri Born into a family of music, Nila Sinha Roy started learning music at the tender age of 6 from her father. Later, she began learning Khayal from Dr. Amiya Ranjan Banerjee of Bishnupur Gharana and she learned Thumri, Dadra and Bhajan from Smt. Dipali Nag of Agra Gharana. At present, she is training under Padmashree Smt. Shanti Hiranand who is one of the senior most disciples of Ghazal Queen Begum Akhtar. Nila Sinha Roy possesses a very melodious voice and a pleasing style of singing. Nila Sinha Roy is a regular performer for All India Radio and Doordarshan. Today, Nila Sinha Roy has established herself as one of renowned female vocalists in Hindustani Music (Khayal, Dadra, Bhajan, Ghazal and Ragpradhan Bengali Songs) in India. She is an empanelled artist of established category in ICCR for performing within the country and abroad. It is not very often that one comes across a voice like Nila Sinha’s – a voice with soul and emotion. Besides being gifted with a rich and sonorous voice, she is well groomed and it reflects in her performances.

Nila Sinha began her recital with thumri in Khamaj with bols “Kahe marore mori baiyan” and another thumri “ tere bina balam “ in rag Kaushikdhawani . After these crisp thmuris Nila moved on to present ghazals . She started with Kaifi Azmi’s “itna to zindgi mein kisi ki khalal pade” followed by Mirza Galib ‘s famous ghazal “ye na this hamari kismet” amidst thunders applause. She doled out with two another ghazals ali Ahmed Jalil’s “Ab chhalakte hue sagar nai dekhe jate” and Daafg Dalvi’s “Ujro(hesitation) aane mein bhi hai aur bulate bhi nahi”. Her flawless rendition of some of the Ghazals enthralled the audiences amid wah-wah. Then she moved on with more ghazals penned by Sudarshan Fakkir “Ahle ulfat ke hawalon pe hasi aati hai” Shakeel Badyuni’s famous ghazal “mere humnafas mere humnava” , Faiz Ahmed Faiz’ “Aaye kuch abbra kuch sharab aaye” amidst rapport appreciation.

She concluded with Begum Aktar’s famous composition “Aye mohabbat tere anjam per rona aaya…..” . The strength of her performance lies not only in the fact that she can render the most complex compositions with remarkably effortless ease but more because even the simplest of her renditions has the ability to touch the heart strings of the audience.

Nila Sinha was well accompanied by Debashish Dhar on Tabla and Paromita Mukherjee on Harmonium .
