Government had increased the ex-gratia given to the Defence personnel from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 50 lakh.

Chandigarh, August 28–The Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Lal, has said that successors of the first generation of freedom fighters and INA members would also be invited at the national and state functions, and, like the freedom fighters, funerals of their widows would be performed with state honour.
The Chief Minister was speaking at the Jayanti Samaroh of Hukam Chand Kanungo, martyr of the 1857 freedom struggle, organised by the Society of Kanungo Brothers of Hansi, in New Delhi today.
He said that the state government had increased the ex-gratia given to the Defence personnel from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 50 lakh. Financial as well as other assistance is also provided to those serving, ex-servicemen and their dependents. An international level Martyrs Memorial is being set up in Ambala to commemorate the gallant deeds and sacrifices made by the freedom fighters of the state.
Paying floral tributes to martyr Hukam Chand Jain on behalf of the state government and the people of Haryana, the Chief Minister said that several patriots sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country and it is the result of their sacrifices that we all are living in independent India.
The movement of 1857 first began in Ambala Cantonment. During this movement, various freedom fighters of Haryana were put in jails and tortured by the Britishers. Many patriots were sentenced to death and Lala Hukam Chand was also among such brave heroes, he added.
The Chief Minister said that Lala Hukam Chand was born in 1816 in Hansi. He was appointed Kanungo of the districts of Hisar and Karnal by Bahadurshah Zafar. Lala Hukam Chand had actively participated in the 1857 revolt. On May 29, 1857, people under the leadership of Lala Hukam Chand and Munir Beg had rebelled against the British Government in Hansi city. The Lal Road in Hansi bears evidence to the sacrifices made by the people of the area to secure freedom of the country, he added.
Dr Anil Jain, national General Secretary and Haryana In charge, BJP, also paid floral tributes to martyr Hukam Chand. Dr. Jain expressed his gratitude to the Chief Minister for organising the enlightening pravachan of Jain Muni Shri Tarun Sagar Ji in the Haryana Vidhan Sabha.
