Rashtriya Ekta Diwas Celebrated.

Chandigarh, 31st October 2017: The City Beautiful celebrated the 142nd birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas today. Series of events took place in every nook and corner of the city to pay tribute to the great nationalist who played a stellar role in unifying the country.

The celebrations began with Run for Unity organized by Sports and Tourism Department of Chandigarh Administration at Sukhna Lake. Sh. V.P Singh Badnore, Governor of Punjab and Administrator, U.T., Chandigarh flagged off the run after administering the pledge to the people. Sh. Parimal Rai, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, Sh. A.K Sinha, IAS, Finance Secretary, Sh. B.L. Sharma, IAS, Education Secretary, Sh. Ajit Balaji Joshi, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Sh. Jitender Yadav, IAS, Director Tourism, Capt. Karnail Singh, PCS, Director Sports, Sh. Kapil Setia, Chief Architect, Chandigarh Administration and many other officers were part of this event.

Taking the celebrations forward, Sh. Parimal Rai administered the pledge to the employees of U.T. Secretariat. On the other hand Department of Higher Education in collaboration with MCM paid homage to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth anniversary during a function observing Rashtriya Ekta Diwas in MCM College, Chandigarh today. Smt. Kirron Kher, Member of Parliament, Chandigarh graced the occasion with her presence as the Chief Guest.

A galaxy of dignitaries marked their presence as the Guests of Honour for the event including Sh. H.R. Gandhar, Senior Governing Body Member, DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi, Sh. A. K. Sinha, Finance Secretary, Sh. Ajit Balaji Joshi, Deputy Commissioner, Sh. B.L. Sharma, Education, Secretary, Sh. R. K. Popli, Director Higher Education, and Sh. Rajiv Kumar Gupta, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh.

Urging the youth to celebrate an India that draws strength from its diversity, Mrs.Kirron Kher said that National Unity Day is an occasion to introspect and emulate Sardar Patel’s legacy of long enduring struggle for bipartisanship.

Highlighting the crucial role of Sardar Patel in the formation of Indian Union of States, the keynote speaker Dr. Sukhmani Bal Riar, Chairperson, History Department, PU apprised the audience of his integrity and political acumen that was instrumental in invoking a sense of patriotism in fellow countrymen and his role in employing unity for the progress of our glorious motherland. Guest Speaker Dr. Rajiv Lochan, Professor, Department of History, PU said that Sardar Patel’s contribution is unparalleled as he was the one who fought the slavish idea ingrained by the Britishers that Indians are intrinsically divided into groups and played an instrumental role in the seemingly impossible task of unifying 565 princely states of India. Painting competitions held to commemorate Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary were awarded during the function. MCM’s star sportsperson Chahat Arora- an International and National Prize winning swimmer was awarded a cash prize of Rs.50,000 by the college on the occasion to recognize her exemplary performance.

Reiterating that men do not become great by themselves but by uplifting fellow beings, Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava exhorted the youth to dedicate themselves to the preservation of unity, integrity and security of the nation and strive towards spreading the message of brotherhood among their countrymen.
