Chandigarh September 22 – Lt. Governor of Puducherry, Dr. Kiran Bedi, today emphasized need to create a cadre of responsible, responsive, honest, dedicated and sincere leaders to fulfill the aspiration of Young India . She was delivering the 2nd J.C. Anand Memorial Lecture which was organised by the Department of Political Science, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh and inaugurated the Governance and Leadership Courses offered by the Department-cum-Centre for Women’s Studies and Development, here today.
Dr. Kiran Bedi shared her vision regarding the Good Governance and Leadership Skills in India to match the best in the world.
Dr. Bedi added that the leadership comes when we go back to basics to learn. We need missionaries with a mission and leadership starts with a mission. When you teach values, to serve people, to research, to connect with people, learn integrity, then leaders are formed.
While remembering Prof. Anand, Dr. Bedi said that it is an emotional day for a student to remember her teacher Prof. Anand who impacted her in many ways. She remembered him foundly as a person carrying lot of books in hands and perspiring all the time, always thorough in his presentations. He impacted by gifting the thrust to know more/learn more/read more, always took his students back to basics, sowing leadership when he was introducing leaders to his students, raised the bar every time by throwing new challenges. She further added that the teacher in him inspired the thirst for research leading to idea of citizenship which came from his classrooms. She paid homage to Prof. Anand by informing that he taught lot of self-evaluation and encouraging his students to ask lot of questions.
Prof. Arun K. Grover, Vice Chancellor, PU, while giving a welcome address, stated that it was a moment of proud privilege to have Dr. Bedi who is also an alumnus of P.U. to deliver J.C. Anand Memorial Lecture.
Ms. Urvashi Gulati, ,former Chief Information Commissioner, Haryana, spoke about the achievements of Prof. J.C. Anand as a teacher in the PU. She added that Dr. Bedi, a student of Professor Anand, is a most inspiring Youth Icon of India and was a Leader even as a teenager. She knows how to fight and get her right. She added that Dr. Bedi has many firsts to her credit.
Prof. Ronki Ram, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chair Professor and fellow, PU introduced the Speaker to the audience.
Dr. Navjot, Chairperson, Department of Political Science while proposing formal vote of thanks, highlighted the achievements of the Department, especially about the number one position of the Department amongst the Universities in India by the Times Higher Education World Rankings of this year.
The lecture was attended by the students, faculty, members of Anand family and senior civil servants.
