Chandigarh, 21st September 2017: The Governor of Punjab and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh, Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore presided over a meeting to review the law and order situation in the City at U.T. Secretariat today.

Anurag Agarwal, IAS, Home Secretary, Sh. O.P Mishra, IPS, Director General of Police, Smt. Jagdale Nilambari Vijay, IPS, SSP, Sh. Shashank Anand, IPS, SSP Traffic, Sh. Eish Singhal, IPS were present during the meeting.
At the onset, the Governor praised the Chandigarh Police for astutely handling the law and order situation and maintaining peace in the City during the period when the Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Verdict was to be announced by the Panchkula court.
Briefing the officers in the review meeting, Smt. Jagdale Nilambari Vijay, SSP Chandigarh shared that there has been a decrease in the heinous crimes like thefts, murders, and snatchings in the City as compared to the figures of previous year. Some good recoveries have been recorded under the crime against properties such as motor vehicles thefts, robbery, snatchings etc. It was also discussed that the conviction rate in Chandigarh is far less than that of the neighboring states.
In order to prohibit smoking of tobacco in public places, the SSP shared that more than 150 challans were issued under the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Act. The Police Department has also started a special drive under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act to track the activity of the drug mafias and to control the supply of drugs in the City. The Governor acknowledged the efforts of the Department and urged them to keep a close watch to control such activities and movements of drug menace by monitoring it regularly.
The SSP further mentioned that under the Nigehbaan project, 1000 CCTV cameras have been installed in different areas of Chandigarh to ensure safety and security of the citizens.
The Administrator lauded the initiatives taken by the Model Jail, Chandigarh for completing the Skill development courses for the inmates. He also appreciated the efforts put in by the team in creation of the Gulal making unit, pure candle making units wherein the inmates make the products for sale in the market. He also praised the anganwari food project of the model jail which supplies food to over 100 anganwari centres in Chandigarh.
Taking cognizance of the rising cyber crimes in Chandigarh, Sh. V.P Singh Badnore has asked the officers concerned to upgrade the Cyber Crime Cell, so that it is fully geared up and equipped with latest gadgets to check the crime instantaneously. He also applauded the plan of the Police Department to create a cyber cell in each police station and for giving training to the Police officials for managing the small cyber crimes at each police station level, with efficiency.
The Administrator also directed the Police officers to take all possible steps to put in place a proper mechanism to ensure smooth flow of traffic within the City, especially during the peak hours, and explore the possibility of using one way traffic option during peak hours or other options, for its meticulous management. He further asked the Department to chalk out plans for better connectivity between sectors by introducing subways in the City. Recalling the amazing work done by Traffic Police during the heavy rainfall in the City, the Administrator asked the Department to ensure such good work for managing the traffic congestion proficiently.
Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore issued directions to the Police Department for ensuring that his movement across the city does not cause inconvenience to the general public. He also insisted that there should be minimal or no closure of the traffic movement, especially on the opposite direction, during the movement of his cavalcade through the city.
Reiterating his resolve to make Chandigarh a crime free City, Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore said that all possible steps using the latest techniques and technology, devising Special Operation Plans and effectively execution of the strategies would be ensured , to make Chandigarh a safe and Crime Free City.
