SITARIST ADNAN AND ACCLAIMED MEETA PANDIT ENLIVEN DAY 2 OF THREE DAY VOCAL & SITAR FESTIVAL AT PUNJAB KALA BHAWAN

The second day of the ongoing Three day Vocal & Sitar Festival witnessed a distinctive performance of Sitar Recital by the impressive Sitar Player Adnan Khan and acclaimed Vocalist Meeta Pandit of Gwalior Gharana at Punjab Kala Bhawan here today. 6:00 pm onwards.
The son of renowned Sitar player Ustad Saeed Khan of Kirana gharana, Adnan started his initial sitar training under his maternal grand father, Late Zafar Ahmed Khan. He has since been learning the intricacies of the instrument from his father. The gayaki ang is clearly palpable in his rendition of sitar. Further, he gives stress on melody and fine tonal quality, purity of ragas, swar and sargam. He is now learning the gayaki ang from his uncle Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan. The talented young Adnan has performed in programmes throughout India including the music festival of Harballav in Jalandhar, and the Kal ke Kalakar in Mumbai. He has become a Junior Scholar at ITC SRA under Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan from December 2009.
On other hand Meeta Pandit is one of the brightest stars of the world of classical music in especially Gwalior Gharana. Meeta is grand-daughter and disciple of Padma Bhushan Pt Krishna Rao Shankar Pandit, the doyen of Northern Indian Classical music in the 20th century, and the daughter and disciple of legendary Pt Laxmanrao Krishnarao Pandit. Meeta is the sixth of the unbroken Pandit line and has the unique distinction of being the first woman musician in the family. Her melodious and robust voice coupled with intricate handling of ragas has won her critical acclaim, and a large following of music lovers. Meeta’s voice is unique-deep, rich and penetrating with tremendous power, stretching over an amazingly wide range of over 3 octaves. The rendering of traditional, but increasingly rare, Tappa is one of the sublime offerings in her concerts.
Adnan chose Raga “Shudh Kalyana” set to vilambit teen taal to form the raga form. Then he moved on to another gat drut teen taal with perfect maturity and expansion. Adnan mesmerized the audience with his sheer skill, deft handling of the raga, lightening speed of Taans.
The audience was thrilled to relish the recital as he doled out with concluded composition in famous Afgani Dhun “Anar Anar” amidst thunderous applause.
The excellent accompaniment on Tabla by city beautiful based young and talented Percussionist Avirbhav Verma and added to the success of the concert.
After Adnan’s thunderous performance Meeta Pandit took centre stage. She opened up the performance with Rag “Malagunji” . After a reposeful aalap Meeta presented Bada Khyal bandish “ aare man samjhat nahi ” in aada chautaal . Then she went on to doled out another traditional bandish “Na janu kaisi preet” set to teen taal in Tarana before she presented Tappa set to Khamaj ‘ Chal pehchani miyan main to “ in her sweet and tempting voice amidst thunderous applause. She concluded her recital with tempting Thumri in raga Pahari “Kahe Gaye Pardes ” which was well received.. She was well accompanied by Mithilesh Jha on Tabla and Paromita Mukherjee on Harmonium.
