Chandigarh, July 15-Haryana’s contingent for Rio Olympics will have 21 sportspersons including 11 females. While five of the sportspersons would participate in athletics, two would compete in boxing, six in wrestling and eight of them are hockey players.
Stating this today, Haryana Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Mr Anil Vij said that Rio Olympics would begin on August 5 and conclude on August 21.He hoped that the sportspersons of Haryana would give outstanding performance and bring laurels to the State and the country.
He said that the eleven female players who would participate in various competitions included Nirmala Sheoran of Bhiwani in athletics (400 metres), Seema Antil of Sonepat in athletics (Discus Throw), Vinesh Phogat of Bhiwani in wrestling (48kg weight category), Babita Kumari of Bhiwani in wrestling (53kg) and Sakshi Malik of Rohtak in wrestling (58kg). Others included hockey players namely Savita Punia of Sirsa, Poonam Malik of Hisar, Monika Malik of Sonepat, Rani Rampal, Navjot Kaur of Kurukshetra and Deepika Thakur of Yamunanagar, the Sub Captain.
He said that the ten male players included Sandeep Kumar of Mahendragarh in athletics (50 km walk), Inderjeet Singh of Bhiwani in athletics (Shot-put), Dharmbir Singh of Rohtak in athletics (200 metres), Manoj Kumar of Kaithal in boxing (64kg), Vikas Krishan Yadav of Gurgaon in boxing (75kg), Yogeshwar Dutt of Sonepat in wrestling (65kg), Ravinder Khatri of Jhajjar in wrestling (85kg), Hardeep Singh of Jind in wrestling (98kg), Sardara Singh of Sirsa and Surender Kumar of Karnal are hockey players.
